Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Immunisation Programme
RSV is a very serious, common virus that can make newborn babies very sick, with 1 in 2 babies getting RSV in the first year of life. Babies under three months old get sicker with RSV than older children. The virus can make it hard for babies to breathe, with some babies needing to go to the hospital and could end up in intensive care.
From September 2024, the RSV Immunisation Pathfinder Programme will be implemented by the HSE for all newborn infants during the upcoming RSV season (September 2024 - February 2025). This means all newborn infants, before they are discharged home from the maternity hospital, will be given Nirsevimab, an antibody that prevents more than 80% of RSV infections and hospitalisations.
More information can be found in this leaflet and by visiting the HSE website.
Pregnancy Stages
It is important to remember that every woman’s pregnancy is different and every pregnancy you have will be different. Pregnancy can last for up to 40 weeks but some women can deliver earlier or later. Doctors break up the pregnancy into 3 different stages called trimesters.
